Dont Scratch it! Why to go to a profesional.

Scratchers

The term scratcher refers to a person who tattoos people without any talent, training or even a license. This will usually be carried out in said persons home (or anywhere other than a studio),  sometimes using a devise known as a "Stick n poke" or a tattoo machine which can easily be purchased online. There are even online courses you can now take that claim to teach you to tattoo. It takes years of hard work for artists to hone their individual style and brush up on their technique. Working as apprentices and earning the right to tattoo the public. This is why there is a staggering contrast between a tattoo done by a professional and that of a scratcher. If you are considering a tattoo, make sure your artist is reputable and licensed (and not tattooing from his or her kitchen). Likewise if you are considering investing in a "Stick n Poke" and permanently marking another person's body please just don't do it!

This first tattoo belongs to Kate Cross and she said

"I have a tattoo on my hand that I so regret. A friend did it for me that
was starting out and he put that much ink in it my knuckle is
permanently blue. The tattoo looks a black mess...I HATE IT"

The permanent blue that Kate is referring to is known in tattooing as a blowout. This is caused by the tattooer being too heavy handed and pushing the ink too deep into the skin causing it to spread underneath the surface, resulting in a bruising effect which can be quite noticeable. One of many reasons to go to a professional.

Poor Kate is stuck with this forever. What an amazing friend!

These two pictures are a prime example of why not to have a go at tattooing at home. They were sent in by a lady named Evie Newman, Evie's only quote on the piture on the left was,

"#SeshHappened"

I imagine this is her son in the pictures as she then sent the second picture with the words,

"Practice lines before they done my lads arm"

It is quite hard to believe that there was any practicing going on before that atrocity was created, but there you go!

That is one "sesh" that has left its mark!

Another guy who probably wishes he had missed the "sesh" is
Derek Taberner with this next tattoo.

"The story behind my tattoo obviously involved alcohol, drugs and a tattoo kit . A friend of mine who I used to spend a lot of time with playing darts and having mad nights in house decided to have a crazy night one weekend. The night was going good we were all pretty wrecked and I dared him to get the tattoo kit out and tattoo his name on my arm oblivious to what he was doing I decided to carry on with the night drinking more and more until I actually couldn't remember what was going on . Next thing I knew I was waking up the next morning with the missus shouting at me "What have you done?" and why was there black all over the white sheets? I raised my arm and saw this hahahaha."

Black on the white sheets was the least of Derek's problems!

This tattoo was carried out by the wearer's sister. Crystal Shearer let her sister tattoo her to prove a point to her mum.

"My mum didn't believe that I was going to let her tattoo me and I did, the next thing my mum heard was the gun going."

Crystal then went on to explain the thought behind the image.

"The sun is because she is the golden child (well was) and the moon is to show the dark side (me) and that we are a team."

This is really quite sweet. But Crystal didn't stop there.

"I now have two more done by her but one didn't take so is just a scar. Half an elephant because I wanted to ask people if they like my trunk, and a cross because I was bored at 13 and always with the deathly hallows."

In this case mother did know best and sisters should not be doing it for themselves!

This charming work of art was sent in by Ash Wilson and was another result of a drunken night.

"I had my drunk friend tattoo the word bepis on my ankle in red and blue and it's probably the worst tattoo I have ever seen."

In case you are wondering, the word bepis is defined as a mispronunciation of the word penis. This has now been associated with Pepsi, for which the logo is red and blue.

Ash probably feels like a bit of a "bepis" when he looks at this tattoo!

Becca Wright chose to have a mushroom tattooed on her thumb. She now unfortunately thinks it looks more like something else.

"Lmao I got a mushroom 🍄 I used to love them, but it looks more like a skinny circumcised penis."

She also went on to explain that her friend had done it when they had had too much to drink.

Becca is going to remember that drunken night!

Lucy Hawthorn unbelievably got this tattoo from an artist with her
own shop and who Lucy believed to be reputable. She isn't a scratcher
but I think you will agree that this tattoo has a place in this blog.

Lucy went into said artist and asked her for a peacock feather as a touching tribute to her family. With visions of a beautiful light and feathery tattoo to represent her and her six lovely children. The outcome couldn't be further from what she had in mind.

"As soon as I saw it I burst into tears"

She then went on to explain how she had left the shop where she had this done and went across town to another to see if they were able to cover it. She had to wait until the skin was fully healed but she now has a beautiful tattoo to be proud of.

Poor Lucy was unlucky in this instance, still at least she no longer has to look at this awful tattoo!

These are great examples of what not to do. If you are looking to get tattooed it is always important to do your research. Pick a style that you like and spend time thinking about it, look for your favourite artist in this style, as most will specialise in one style. Then trawl through there portfolio of pictures (social media gives us a great opportunity to do this), but don't get drunk and let your so called friends tattoo you.
Scrimping on tattoos is an expensive game as cover ups and lazer removal aren't cheap.
Tattooing as an art form can be beautiful, so don't regret your ink.
Let me know what you think of the tattoos in this article.

Next week I will be looking at tattoos that give people strength and how these can be a crutch for many, such as this well known symbol.
